Most directories tell you a place exists. This one tells you what it asks of you.

I mapped 58 intentional communities, land projects, and neighborhood commons around Seattle, then asked a question the directories do not: what does each one actually invite a stranger to do? Distance turned out to be the wrong measure. Nearness and welcome are not the same thing, and the gap between them is most of this map.

If you sort these places by distance, as every directory does, you get a list that tells you almost nothing about what you can do tomorrow. Sorted by what they invite instead, the shape of the thing changes completely.

The three open doors are Beacon Food Forest, Seattle Emergency Hubs, West Seattle Tool Library. That is the entire set of places within reach where a person can turn up, be useful for a day, and go home, without an introduction. Everything else asks for something first: a form, a call, a season of showing up online, or an invitation that has to be earned rather than requested.

This is not a complaint about any of these communities. Nearly all of them are doing exactly the right thing: a group of people who live together and take real risks together should not hand strangers the keys. The mistake was mine, and it is the mistake the map exists to fix. Looking at a map of dots, I read closeness as availability. It is not.

What this map turned out to be

These gates are not friction. They are the oldest verification system running.

We built this as a guide for one person seeking community, and read the invitations, applications, and seasons of showing up as obstacles. They are the opposite. A group that shares meals, money, land, and children cannot afford to be wrong about who is in the room, and the vouching that guards that room is the same mechanism the whole internet is missing: it verifies people, corrects facts, and holds its members accountable and held. That insight now anchors the full design, and the argument that led here is the personhood essay.

Nothing above requires a platform to exist first. Each part is a file or a page, so a locality that wanted its own map could start with a notebook and a walk, and the software would only be how the result gets shared.

Five bands out from where you stand, and six kinds of participation. A place three hours away that invites you to live there is a different proposition from one on your street that invites you to visit. The rings hold that difference; a pin on a road map does not.

Seattle is not the subject, it is the first instance. The method is the subject: find the places near a person that invite real participation, say plainly what each one asks of you, and put the boundary in writing next to the invitation. That works anywhere someone is willing to do the walking.

Eight passes, and one thing I have not done.

Each entry was found from public sources, checked for whether the group still exists and still does what it says, described from its own words rather than mine, and given an honest travel estimate from West Seattle. Every record carries a verification date and a recheck date, because a community map that is not re-walked becomes a list of ghosts within about a year.
